Unit Overview: Students will read the book Miso Magic and explore the process of miso-making in Japan in a three-lesson History/Social Science unit. The lessons aim to engage 2nd-grade students in Los Angeles County, including English Language (ELD) learners at the expanding proficiency level, and address students from varied backgrounds. Author Moni Ritchie Hadley, Illustrator Mizuho Fujisawa, Publisher Albert Whitman & Co.
Lesson 1: In lesson 1 of 3, students will learn the vocabulary needed to understand the process of miso-making using context and picture clues, synonyms, reading and simplifying, and asking questions.
Lesson 2: In lesson 2 of 3, students will read, discuss, take notes, and create a flowchart about the miso-making process after reading the picture book, “Miso Magic” by Moni Ritchie Hadley.
Lesson 3: In lesson 3 of 3, students will use their flowcharts from the last lesson as a guide to write and edit a paragraph on a readable document with legible print, summarizing the process of miso making.
